The Annual Richmond Book Fair
On the weekend of the 25th to 27th October 2013, The Gerard Sekoto Foundation and the committee of the Richmond Book Fair recently came together and arranged a reading of Sekoto’s story “Shorty and Billy Boy” to 62 children from the shanty town of Richmond.
This reading preceded the parade of handmade wire toy-motorcars, crafted by these children, through the village of Richmond. Thereafter each child was rewarded with a personal copy of ‘Shorty and Billy Boy’ as well as ‘Gerard Sekoto’s World’ (an interactive activity book for young children) donated by the GSF
The Gerard Sekoto Foundation is in the process of raising awareness for the need for art education for underprivileged children in South Africa.
The Foundation wishes to establish a children’s library in the Karoo town of Richmond where children of Bushman origin live in destitute poverty and neglect
Access to literature and education about art and the importance of creative stimulation presently remains a privilege for the few in South Africa.
There is an urgent need to introduce creative activity and cultural awareness to these children,
GSF kindly invites anyone interested in helping out in any way to contact us through the website.
