SEKOTO’S GIRL WITH GUITAR SELLS FOR R1,4 MILLION
This October’s “South African Sale” at Bonhams managed to sell Sekoto’s “Girl with a Guitar” for R1 415 524,00. Originally catalogued as dated 1949, this painting was actually done in 1969.
Girl with Guitar evokes the melancholy characteristic of Sekoto's blue period which emerged around 1960 and lasted no later than1969 .The cold tonal changes hugely contrast to Sekoto's usual vibrant and colourful depictions. This suggests the Parisian climate of grey skies and its effect on colour was of influence but can also be read as symbolic of the distancing he felt from the bright sunshine of his own country. The pensive atmosphere is heightened by the focused, downward gaze of the female figure, consumed by the music she is composing. This image is a memorable demonstration of his ability to use colour and composition to create a particular tone and atmosphere of tranquility.
