SEKOTO’S GIRL WITH GUITAR SELLS FOR R1,4 MILLION

This October’s “South African Sale” at Bonhams managed to sell Sekoto’s “Girl with a Guitar” for R1 415 524,00. Originally catalogued as dated 1949, this painting was actually done in 1969.

Girl with Guitar  evokes the melancholy characteristic of Sekoto's blue period which emerged around 1960 and lasted no later than1969 .The cold tonal changes hugely contrast to Sekoto's usual vibrant and colourful depictions. This suggests the Parisian climate of grey skies and its effect on colour was of influence but can also be read as  symbolic of the distancing he felt  from the bright sunshine of his own country. The pensive atmosphere is heightened by the focused, downward gaze of the female figure, consumed by the music she is composing. This image is a memorable demonstration of his ability to use colour and composition to create a particular tone and atmosphere of tranquility. The tone and texture of the hues of blue and grey, coupled with the balance of light and shade and the psychological prominence of the figure in the foreground, arrests the viewer's attention aesthetically, emotionally and intellectually, bringing to life the goings on and drama of the internal world of the girl with the
guitar.
