HAPPY BIRTHDAY OUR DEAR GERARD SEKOTO - 9th December 2013
"Today marks the 100th birthday anniversary of Gerard Sekoto: as the world takes stock and ponders on the huge impact of Nelson Mandela’s life and his example of integrity, self-discipline, justice and inter- personal respect, so we are able to look at Sekoto’s painterly interpretation of the inherent dignity and humanity of his own subject matter.
Sekoto chose to paint what others did not wish or refused to see. His own personal fight against the racism which consumed South African politics, led to his decision to leave his country of birth and make a new home in France. There, he continued to use his rich and varied talents to build awareness of the plight of his fellow countrymen.
As a country, we are the richer for the legacy left to us by Sekoto - his paintings and drawings, his musical compositions and his published and unpublished writings."
