The Art of Disruptions (2016)

"The Art of Disruptions" This year, 2016, marks several keystones in the history of South Africa. The 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to Pretoria against pass laws, the declaration of District Six as a whites-only area in 1966 (under the Group Areas Act of 1950), the 40th anniversary of the 1976 youth protests, (mainly against the introduction of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction), and the 1986 declaration of a state of emergency (the first was in 1985) by the South African government intended to repress and curb mass action.

Take a Sekoto home from SAMRO scholarships evening (2015)

The Gerard Sekoto Foundation will be raising awareness of his work by selling limited-edition prints at Saturday’s SAMRO Overseas Scholarships finals. The exhibition and sale of highly collectable Sekoto prints and posters will take place at Johannesburg’s Linder Auditorium on Saturday, 29 August 2015 from 6pm.

SEKOTO’S GIRL WITH GUITAR SELLS FOR R1,4 MILLION (2013)

This October’s “South African Sale” at Bonhams managed to sell Sekoto’s “Girl with a Guitar” for R1 415 524,00. Originally catalogued as dated 1949, this painting was actually done in 1969.

Gerard Sekoto died 10 years ago on the 9th December 2003 at the age of 100.


The Annual Richmond Book Fair (2013)

On the weekend of the 25th to 27th October 2013, The Gerard Sekoto Foundation and the committee of the Richmond Book Fair recently came together and arranged a reading of Sekoto’s story  “Shorty and Billy Boy” to 62 children from the shanty town of Richmond.
